The premise behind the outdoor chapel project was to instill a sense of spirituality without specifically relating to a religious denomination. In developing the chapel I challenged myself to work solely with a few drawings and by generating iterations by hand. I wanted the material I used to inform the project and develop a project through tactile means.
The metallic trees were originally intended to be large monolith rocks that spiral inwards on the center of the chapel. I wanted the environment to become the walls of the chapel. As I began to manipulate material, I stumbled upon these interesting tree like structures. These metallic trees anchored into the sides of the raised platform create a sense of a barren landscape.
The chapel, planned to be centered in a garden on Texas A&M’s campus, evokes a sense of hell. I envisioned visitors circling the site before crossing the bridge to the chapel. The seat (Later moved to the middle) is for the participant to sit upon and reflect.
