Nihilism & Pink represents my efforts to challenge the organization present in Villa Medici. Beginning with identification of the elements present in plan such as datum, axis, and four square. I then moved to use Architectural operations to disfigure the plan.
After a series of experiments through rotation, weakening, translation, and consolidation, I began working with the idea of assemblage. I wanted to split the plan into small parts which, while maintain the identity of the plan (Through Axis, Datum, Garden, Edge) would be unrecognizable. I generated at first a tessellation to overlay and break the plan apart. This proved successful but the resulting forms were to chaotic. I wanted to misrepresent the information, not destroy.
Taking the assemblage idea, I moved to fragment the plan using figures generated via my other experimentation. I was able to form four compositions that accomplished my goals. Moving the project forward I elected to incorporate an assignment earlier in the semester. Pink.
Taking the figures generated in Pink I combined them with two of the compositions found at the end of my exploration. The figures found in Pink were represented as white figures while the figures from Nihilism & Pink compositions were colored. I specifically chose the art style seen in the final objects to reflect my intention about misrepresenting the information. The final objects can be read as either a 2D or 3D figure. The white portion from some angles appears to be ground, while in another can be interpreted as architecture.
The White figure also calls back to the original plan of Villa Medici. Villa Medici is separated by an alley way flanked by two defined edges. Vertically there is essentially two villas. The white figure represents this division and edge separating the two composites, whose identity belongs to Villa Medici.
