The last studio of my Undergraduate Degree was interrupted by COVID-19. No one was quite sure how us students would complete our studio assignments, it felt like we were left on our own.

During this time I took it upon myself to create a statement piece, both for studio and as commentary on the situation caused by the virus. I decided to make mask from clay and found objects in my apartment. Egg cartons, Wire, Soda cans, Tissue, Paper towels and their rolls all became parts of a mask.

These masks were not intended to resemble that of cloth or the recognizable blue surgical mask. Instead I wanted to invoke a Lovecraftion essence in these pieces. H.P. Lovecraft’s works not by stating the danger, but by leaving details missing. He allows individuals to make jumps in logic and allow their own nightmares to fuel his stories. Just as (At the time) no one knew anything certain about COVID-19 and people’s fear grew.
